Best Astrophotography Cameras and Setups for Beginners

New astrophotographers almost always ask which telescope to buy first, when the honest answer is that the mount matters more than the optical tube for the first year of imaging. A tracking mount that follows the sky's rotation accurately is the foundation everything else depends on; a great telescope on a poor mount produces trailed, blurry stars no matter how good the glass is.

Start with what you already have

A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a standard lens, mounted on a basic star tracker, is genuinely capable of striking wide-field shots of the Milky Way, constellations, and bright nebulae — and it's a far gentler learning curve than jumping straight into telescope-based deep-sky imaging. This stage teaches framing, exposure stacking, and basic processing without the added complexity of guiding through a telescope.

The next step: a dedicated imaging setup

Once wide-field imaging feels comfortable, a natural next step is a short refractor (around 60–80mm) designed for imaging rather than visual use, paired with an equatorial tracking mount rated well above the combined weight of your gear — mounts perform best when not loaded near their maximum capacity.

Cameras: dedicated astro cameras vs. your existing DSLR

Don't skip guiding for too long

A small guide camera and guide scope, which continuously correct small tracking errors in your main mount, make a larger difference to image quality than almost any other single upgrade once your exposures start running past 60–90 seconds. It's a common second-year purchase that many imagers wish they'd made sooner.
