Many owners upgrade their telescope before ever upgrading the eyepieces it came with — usually the wrong order of priorities. The eyepiece that ships in a starter kit is often the weakest link in the whole optical chain, and a single well-chosen replacement can noticeably sharpen the view without spending anywhere near the cost of a new telescope.
Focal length: pick a small kit, not one eyepiece
An eyepiece's focal length, combined with your telescope's focal length, sets the magnification — shorter eyepiece focal length means higher magnification. Rather than chasing one "best" eyepiece, a small kit covering low (around 25–32mm), medium (around 10–15mm), and high (around 6–9mm) focal lengths covers wide deep-sky views, general-purpose observing, and planetary detail respectively.
Eye relief matters more than most buyers expect
Eye relief is the distance your eye can sit from the eyepiece while still seeing the full field of view. Short eye relief (under around 10mm) can be genuinely uncomfortable, especially for eyeglass wearers, who need to press right up against the lens to avoid a cropped view. If you wear glasses while observing, prioritise eyepieces advertised with long eye relief, typically 15–20mm.
Field of view: how much sky you see at once
Apparent field of view, usually 40–50 degrees on basic eyepieces and up to 82+ degrees on premium wide-field designs, determines how immersive and forgiving the view feels — a wider field makes it easier to keep a tracked object in frame and gives deep-sky targets more visual context. Wide-field eyepieces cost more, but the improvement in comfort and usability is one of the more noticeable upgrades available at any budget level.
Barrel size: a compatibility check first
Eyepieces come in standard barrel diameters — 1.25 inch is by far the most common on beginner and mid-range telescopes, with 2 inch reserved for wider-field eyepieces on larger instruments. Always confirm your telescope's focuser accepts the barrel size before buying.
A sensible first upgrade
If you're only replacing one eyepiece, a mid-focal-length option (roughly 10mm) with generous eye relief and a wider apparent field than your stock eyepiece typically delivers the most noticeable, most-used improvement — general enough for planets and bright deep-sky targets alike.
