Telescope Mount Types Explained: Alt-Azimuth vs. Equatorial

The optical tube gets most of the attention when shopping for a telescope, but the mount underneath it decides how the telescope actually points, tracks, and feels to use in practice. Choosing the wrong mount type causes more day-to-day frustration than choosing a slightly smaller aperture.

Alt-azimuth mounts

An alt-azimuth mount moves in two simple directions: altitude (up and down) and azimuth (left and right), the same intuitive motion as aiming a camera on a tripod. It's the easiest type to understand and use, which is why most beginner telescopes, all Dobsonians, and most spotting-scope-style instruments use it.

The tradeoff appears during tracking: because the sky rotates around a tilted axis (the celestial pole), an object drifts diagonally through the field of view on an alt-azimuth mount, requiring small adjustments in both directions to keep it centred — fine for visual observing, but it complicates long-exposure astrophotography, where the image would rotate slowly during long exposures.

Equatorial mounts

An equatorial mount tilts one of its axes to match Earth's rotational axis, so that once it's roughly aligned with the celestial pole, tracking an object requires movement along a single axis instead of two — the same motion the sky itself makes as it appears to rotate overhead. This makes equatorial mounts the standard choice for long-exposure astrophotography, where a motorised drive on that single axis can track an object accurately for many minutes at a time.

The tradeoff is setup complexity: polar alignment — pointing the mount's tilted axis at the celestial pole — takes practice and a few extra minutes before each session, and the mount itself is usually heavier and more expensive than an equivalent alt-azimuth design.
