They're the fastest way for a beginner to build sky familiarity, though it's worth switching to a red-light or night mode to protect your night vision once you're actually observing.
Session planning software
Planning tools let you check, ahead of time, what's actually worth observing on a given night — which planets are up, when the Moon rises (bright moonlight washes out faint deep-sky targets), and which deep-sky objects are well-placed above the horizon rather than low in murky, turbulent air near the treeline. Spending ten minutes with a planner before heading outside consistently produces better sessions than improvising once you're already set up.
Light pollution and weather tools
Dedicated light-pollution maps let you compare your backyard against nearby darker sites, which is often the highest-leverage decision you can make for deep-sky observing — more valuable than any single gear upgrade. Astronomy-specific weather forecasts, which report cloud cover, seeing (atmospheric steadiness), and transparency separately, are more useful for planning than a general weather app, since a clear but turbulent night can still ruin high-magnification planetary views.
